TRADITIONAL OAK KITCHENS - Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire

Traditional natural solid oak kitchens are very popular in country houses, manor houses, barn conversions, old rectories, farmhouses as well as smart town houses. Traditional kitchens have made full use of both European and English oak whether natural or hand painted as espoused by the Shakers and other artisans employing classic design elements.

HOW OAK IS GRADED
There are three grades of oak in the UK: rustic, character and prime. Character Oak is the grade used most often in kitchens. It is sap-free, unless otherwise stated, contains sound knots and displays the full beauty and 'character' of the grain - see picture to the left. Pippy Oak is a term to descibe wood which has small tight clusters of knots often referred to as 'cats paws' , valued highly by master craftsmen for its decorative appearance.
