STORRINGTON, WEST SUSSEX

Storrington has been a settlement since pre-historic times, (shown in the Domesday Book in 1086, as Estorchestone – ‘the place of the Storks’) and has been a market town since 1399. It has long been recognised as being in a very convenient and attractive location, and a very nice place to live. This has led in recent decades to much housing development and the associated pressures on infrastructure. The village has, so far, just about managed to keep up with modern-day trends without ruining the charm of the old collection of Town buildings.

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is 11th century although it has been much restored. The Roman Catholic Priory of our Lady of England lies between the village and the Downs having been erected in the 19th century.

The Parish runs along the foot of the South Downs and is the shopping centre for several surrounding parishes, in particular that of Sullington, with which, by recent growth, it has merged. This is now recognised in the creation of the joint Parish of Storrington & Sullington

Communications are excellent, with the village being at the junction of good roads, which does lead to a heavy burden of traffic. Pulborough railway station, on a good mail line service to Gatwick Airport and London, is 12 minutes away. Gatwick is 40 minutes away by car. The South Coast at Worthing is 12 miles away.

Although there is a very busy centre there are also pleasant areas within walking distance of the High Street, especially off Old Mill Drive and the recreation ground and pond at the western end of the village. There are many and varied clubs and societies, catering for a wide range of sporting & leisure activities.
