The Star & Garter in East Dean has a compact bar with four stools and three tables with chairs like the one illustrated. The rest of the pub is made over to a restaurant. There is also a terrace garden which is ideal for sitting out on a warm evening.
'Strong on Fish'
Oliver Ligertwood bought and converted the Hurdlemakers into the Star and Garter about three years ago and has created a restaurant-bar of considerable distinction which is 'strong on fish'. Some would decribe this place as a gastro-pub - indeed Egon Ronay does so - but in truth there is not much of the traditional pub left. This is the sort of place where ladies drinking or dining on their own would feel comfortable. It is smart and stylishly decked out with light wood farmhouse tables and old church pews which complement each other well. The restaurant is compact and on the evening a few months ago when I dined here with my wife the room was on the hot side but the service was quick and the food well prepared and presented.
I asked the chef Malcolm Peskett whether he thought his cooking could be labelled as 'Traditional British'? After much deliberation he agreed it could be so described but added that they kept trying new dishes which they could create from local produce and fish. From the one meal I had here I would tentatively observe that the emphasis is on traditional menus strong on protein rather than on the veggie/fruit/white meat associated with mediterranean cuisine. But, Malcolm may surprise us and do more veggie-oriented dishes in the days to come.I'll definitely be returning.
On a warm evening the terrace is an attractive area to sit over a drink; and I can imagine it being very popular with visitors to Goodwood.

Overall this bar-restaurant is a real find and I recommend you try it for yourself. The wines look intersting too but we've not had time yet to evaluate them. Editor, Good Food Guide & Restaurants Sussex.
Here is the Blackboard with today's dishes -28th April 2006
We called in on Sunday evening 16th July for a drink and a look round and sat on the terrace. We arrived at 6.0pm and left at 6.30pm. Eight young people were sitting in the garden/terrace area enjoying the sunshine. The place looked a tip after what must have been a busy lunch period. The garden and terrace still had 'old crocks', glasses, empty bottles and litter and the ground underneath the tables was bestrewn with fag ends. Not a pretty site. A young helper appeared at 6.15pm to clear up. Two people were already eating dinner inside. The housekeeping seemed unusually slack on this occasion. We'll be checking again on this.
