THE SOUTH POND SPRING CLEAN on the 22nd March 2010 started at 1.0 pm with the weather fine but overcast and ended at 4.0 pm. There were 24 adults, 4 children and one dog. In addition, seven gardeners from the CDC had spent the morning and the day before preparing beds for the day of The Spring Clean.

After an initial chat by Bruce Middleton from The South Downs Joint Committee and his counterpart from CDC Mick Gore - Parks and Green Space - everyone dispersed to separate tasks organised by Clare Fuller, the moving sprit behind this collaborative venture between CDC, SDJC, Midhurst Town Council and the community which was supported by Mind, Down to Earth and Friends of Midhurst.

"Two new British native mixed hedgerows were planted by the volunteers. The plants, supplied as a grant from the Real Hedge Fund in West Sussex, included 500 plants of spindle, dog rose. field maple, blackthorn and hazel. The main shrub bed had 100 shrubs planted, including periwinkle and hellebores. These will add a great splash of colour to the area in both the spring and the winter. A general tidy up took place with pruning, litter picking and weeding. Grass seeding was also undertaken on the new landscape areas created from the District Council’s de-silting works at the pond"

In the words of Mick Gore "I hope we can build on this event and create a group of interested local residents who can help us manage and maintain the area and plan further improvements for the future. A green space belongs to the local community and the best green spaces are managed with their help." Further community days are planned for the future, probably at three-monthly intervals.
