Introduction
The Shakers, an off-shoot of the English Quakers, emigrated from Manchester to America where, under the leadership of Ann Lee, they formed a rural community in 1774. Their ethos was “whatever is fashioned let it be plain and simple and for the good” and’ beauty rests on utility”. They were expert craftsmen in wood and thus the Shaker Kitchen was born – plain and simple in design with no ornamentation and to the highest standards of workmanship and with durability a key component

The Original Shaker Kitchen.
The kitchen design owed a lot to the influence of English Country styles as exemplified in George House, Bristol – now a museum - built in 1791 . See the article on George House kitchen on our Classic Kitchens page. You’ll immediately see some similarities with the authentic early Shaker Kitchen: free standing dressers and peg rails. Shaker Kitchens were made out of local woods such as maple, cedar, pine, chestnut, birch, cherry and oak generally painted in off-white, ivory and soft cream. A distinctive feature was the square 5 - section door panelling for cupboards and drawers; worktops were in wood. (Picture left: original Shaker Kitchen from Fired Earth. Note the peg rail for hanging up cabinets and racks. Tidiness was very much in the Skaker ethos, even to hanging up chairs - in this case ladderbacks.)

Shaker Style Kitchens.
A revival of the Shaker Kitchen ‘look’ in the early 1990’s led to a host of innovations, the only authentic Shaker feature remaining being the square-panelling. This now defines the Shaker Kitchen Style. Just about everything else is subject to modification and embellishment of which the Shakers would have been ashamed.

Classic Cream Painted Shaker Kitchen .
These two pictures and the one at the top of the page illustrate the same Classic Shaker kitchen which has a flawless cream finish built up through multiple layer applications of cream paint Note the glass-fronted cabinets permitting display of china and crockery, the wood floor, wooden circular kitchen table, range cooker and simple, clean-looking cast iron handles on the drawers and cupboards. Unusually, this particlar design allows you to express your own personality and taste; the island , for example picture above left, with curved end cabinets adds a softening look, something the original Shakers would have shunned. Worktops are of wood.

Wide Shaker Style Kitchen - a Modern Shaker Kitchen
The White Shaker kitchen in oak with its wide style creates a contemporary kitchen design. The oak grain is subtly revealed. Note the neutral floor, wooden worktops, stainless steel square knobs and glass cabinet giving an in-depth feel. As with all good shakers it has crisp, clean good-looks and never seems crowded inspite of the milk, bread and other items left out on the worktops. Modern Shaker kitchens also have granite worktops |

Country Shaker Style Kitchen Painted Light Cream
Here the door style gives the shaker a modern country slant reminiscent of the classic kitchens of the 18th century. Note the glass fronted cabinets and feature doors, the neutral floor, wooden worktops and pewter cage drop handles. See also a handmade modern country Shaker kitchen HM7 with curved cabinetry. |
Small Kitchens and the Shaker Style.
A lot of flats and period country cottages have strictly limited space for kitchens. Too small to accommodate a kitchen island they are often galley, L shaped or small rectangles; and not always with a window out on to a garden or a view down the street. Shaker Kitchens are ideal for small spaces. Glass fronted cabinets help give depth to a design and the white, ivory and light blue painted 'look' doesn't crowd or intrude on the available space. Simple unfussy knobs and handles and the 'open' clean lines of the Shaker cabinet enhance the feeling of space. |
