Commestibles in Church Hill on the left and a party of walkers from Redford, a village 5 miles to the West of Midhurst, enjoying a relaxing afternoon together in the idyllic and spacious gardens of the Angel Hotel. This is a quite an amazing experience: a hundred yards from the busy North St, yet no sound of traffic. Just another of the surprises awaiting you when you come to this unique town. |

Place to Visit - Midhurst, West Sussex
There are certain criteria, we believe, which determine the Best Place to Visit in UK. Here are some of our suggestions with examples from Midhurst - the Best Place to Visit in West Sussex.
Good Climate with long dry, warm spells in Summer; little or no snow or long spells of wet weather in Winter.
Good hotels, eg. Spread Eagle, Angel Hotel; and excellent B & B's.
Lots of interesting things to see and do eg. Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Goodwood Races, Goodwood Race Track, Festival of Speed.
Excellent food - a full selection of eateries and restaurants from your formal Good Food Guide Restaurant to you Bar - Brasserie.
Good Country Pubs, especially those which have fine gardens and enjoy splendid views of the countryside.. eg The Duke of Cumberland at Henley Village or the Three Horshoes at Elstead.
Quality shopping.
Absence of traffic or low traffic from some or perhaps most of the historic built up area eg. Midhurst Square
Historic buildings eg Cowdray Castle.
Opportunities to enjoy gracious living, relaxed life-style and tranquillity.
A friendly, welcoming host community.
Little or no crime.
Free Parking; good car parks.
Countryside and townscape merge into one landscape accessible to all eg Cowdray Park.
A river (or seascape). eg River Rother.
Access to sports facilities; and Spa eg. Spread Eagle Hotel and Grange Centre.
Country Market - yes! a Midhurst monthly market.
National Trust Areas - yes! several local 'commons' near Midhurst; and Stately Homes Open to the Public.
Fully resourced and helpful Tourist Office eg North St Office.
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or National Park - yes! Midhurst is within one.
In our opinion Midhurst scores very highly against these criteria. The Country Life Magazine gave Midhurst, last year, the accolade of Best Place to Live in Southern England ; and the Town has been short-listed in another competition to find the Best Country Market Town, the outcome of which will be known in the Autumn. So to sum up:
Place to visit? Quite definitely! If you agree with our criteria.
Best Place to Visit in West Sussex. Yes!
Best Place to visit in England? Best Place to visit in UK? As we've said already. Definitely!!

FREE PARKING, FREE PARKING, FREE PARKING is very, very rare in the UK. So visit Midhurst and enjoy free parking while you can - helps you relax and have a hassle free stay. Here's a suggestion. Park in North St Free Car Park and have a picnic on the bank of the River Rother with a view of Cowdray Castle. The Village Bakery (Spinning Wheel) in North St sells same-day baked bread and rolls - delicious!. Commestibles in Church Hill and the Old Courthouse Restaurant in the Square do take-aways; and there are two booze shops for beverages in North St.
Alternatively, have a picnic at South Pond with its wildlife - take something for the ducks - and historic views - park in The Grange Car Park which is also free.
You'll agree: Midhurst is definitely THE best place to visit!
