The Linchmere Mountain Bike Route starts from the Fernhurst free Public Car Park
Start Point
Linchmere 10 miles. Explorer Map 133 Haslemere. Start Point: from the free Public Car Park behind the shops in Fernhurst.
Cross the A 287 to Fernhurst Green, cycle south down the lane and turn right at the T junction after about half a mile. Travel south-west to the junction with the A287 in the hollow with the Sewage Works on your right
Cross the road - very busy at this point - and go through the gate opposite with the bridleway sign and a blue paint mark on the post to the right of it You are now in a meadow adjoining the stream which originates in the Furnace Pond near Lower Lodge Farm.
In winter it is bad going for two hundred yards as the ground is generally wet and chewed up by farm vehicles. An alternative route in winter is to go west from Fernhurst along the Milland road to Lower Lodge Farm - this cuts out the whole of this strip over the clay valley floor.
After negotiating the boggy ground and passing through the gate into another meadow go straight over into the woods. The track is clearly defined and you pass through several copses and then along the side of a large field on your left before entering the woods again near Furnace Pond. Carry on until you hit the Fernhurst - Milland Road at Lower Lodge Farm.
Turn left and follow the lane all the way to Elmers Marsh, the distance being about a mile. On the left you will see the Electricity Sub Station and next on the right a cottage adjoining a track marked with white-washed stones.
Turn right up this track past a few houses and climb the hill on to Parkgate Rough. The going is generally good . Keep following the bridleway which bears sharply right in the area of Hollycombe. The area is wooded and the ground level until you pass the entrance to Stanley Farm on your right After about a quarter of a mile the track starts to drop down hill and bears to the north-west along the contours of Stanley Wood. After a while you come to the junction of this bridleway and the Sussex Border Path. For now continue straight on along the bridleway, down the field margin which shortly emerges at Lower Brookham. At this point join the Sussex Border Path and go east over Linchmere Common until you hit the lane to Linchmere.
Turn right up the lane until you get to the crossroads at Linchmere. It is only a small hamlet but you can just see the church with a group of houses a few hundred yards further on.
Turn left past the bus-stop keeping you eyes skinned for a bridleway going off to your half right in an easterly direction - the picture above. The track at first is metalled but after a short distance reverts to a typical country path. In winter this stretch becomes muddy because of the number of horses using it from local stables, particularly the one on the Ridge a mile further on. You are still on the Sussex Border Path .After hitting the Kingsley Green - Camelsdale lane turn right and after about a mile, with National Trust on your left, turn right down the RUPP (a plain, unmarked signpost).
You are now travelling south towards Fernhurst. The way is solid and firm. After passing two cottages on the left and a farm on the right you enter woodland and follow the winding track downhill over the Marley Heights Lane . The track becomes straighter and you can have a grand, easy ride downhill all the way to Fernhurst, past Vann Common. You hit the Fernhurst - Milland Road after the common. Turn left and cycle back to your start point.
