In contrast with the ubiquitous spot lights embedded in kitchen ceilings pendant lighting is smarter, softer and kinder to the eye. According to Lucy Alexander in the Times there has been a surge in sales of 26% in a leading London store compared with spotlights 4%. The above pendants illustrate some of the different ones available in our Bespoke and Handmade Kitchens. An adjustable low hung pendant light is a focal point above the dining table and provides a pool of light on the table in picture three above - to see full Shaker Kitchen image click here - whereas in the last picture pendants are in a row above a kitchen island
The modern Petersfield kitchen - at the top of the page - illustrates the simple shapes of some pendants with chrome finishes echoing the industrial 'look' of the appliances like the oven. In a country kitchen, however, the old fashioned shaped pendants - see picture on the left - complements the Shaker Style kitchen design
Spot lights often have an irritating hum when used with a dimmer switch. But without a dimmer you might be experiencing your evening meal around an operating table with its clinicaL glare. Ordinary pendants take bulbs, can be raised out of the reach of children and arranged in a design which enables a flexible approach to lighting for different occasions.
Small Kitchens. Here is an interesting comment from the Seattle Times "Small kitchens are often filled with the wrong lighting, making the space feel
dim and enclosed. Using pendant lights on the ceiling and fluorescent lighting
below cabinets will gracefully cast light off the countertops and backsplash,
visually expanding the space and uplifting the overall tone and mood"
