HASLEMERE KITCHENS – THE STORY SO FAR Haslemere’s origins go back to 1221. It remained a small settlement until the coming of the railway in 1859 – the Portsmouth to Waterloo line – which stimulated house building taking it through the Victorian into the Edwardian period with often large houses and mansions being built in their own several acres. - See Top Property Haslemere -click here. Haslemere kitchens have reflected this development, originally with large classic kitchens typical of manor houses and farmhouses of the period. Today, haslemere kitchens in the bigger Victorian and Edwardian houses cover the gamut of modern and traditional kitchen design. The picture here illustrates a typical haslemere kitchen in the modern Shaker style with kitchen island. Painted Shaker kitchens are also popular in flats and maisonettes as the clean lines and unfussy appearance make them ideal for small spaces. However, with the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 in July 2011 more people from Guilford and London are expected to relocate to the town, so the kitchens Haslemere will see built include ultra modern and handleless designs.
