The Sussex Live Music Scene Around Midhurst

TO RECEIVE REGULAR NOTICE OF GIGS & LIVE MUSIC JOIN NETWORK FRIENDS OF MIDHURST

LIVE MUSIC is on the increase in the Midhurst area of Sussex. This is excellent news. The problem in Midhurst and surrounding villages has always been finding suitable venues for gigs which are sufficiently insulated from residential property that they don't cause a nuisance. But duo's, especially guitarists, don't seem to pose a problem. We just have to be sensitive and intelligent in the way we develop our music community. Guitarist, charity organiser - Preston for Kids - and impressario Mark Nelson Preston from New York is keen on helping us turn Midhurst and the area round and about into a Music Town and Destination. We've the talent and some fans but we are hiding ourselves away from the outside world . (Picture of Mark) We need to sit up and become more PR aware. Firstly, musicians and venue owners need to keep me advised on a regular basis what is going on and when. I'm not a mind reader! I need details of your group, names of musicians and their instruments, the types of music and dates and exact times for events. And I need a contact address, email and phone number! And when I email for an update please do your best to respond promptly. But fans you've a hugely important role to play! Photos - good ones - of musicians, events and venues, people attending, reviews and comments generally should be sent to me - one pic at at a time so as not to block my email box - at john.trueman44@virgin.net We need to build A HUGE, HUGE, NETWORK of fans which reaches out to our wellwishers world-wide and includes family, friends, visitors, and music-art lovers generally. Make a point of contacting everyone you know by email, Facebook and Twitter and roping them in. Remind then too to get their friends involved - a bit like a chain-letter! Thanks. Samantha Verrall who does the marketing for the Evans Pubs makes a lot of effort to organise high quality events which are well promoted. Here is Samantha Verall's copy on a recent invitation to listen to the Hanging Tree Band at Lickfold: - "Fantastic Irish music night with The Hanging Tree Band. The Guinness will be flowing and the dance floor cleared... Let's jig the night away from 7.30pm onwards. Hanging Tree Band is a rocking, reeling duo. They play their music with full on passion, energy and verve with a wide range of styles from numbers deep in a strong Celtic tradition, full of fire and élan to sad, slow ballads, beautifully crafted, self -penned instrumentals and songs and famous (and surprising) covers from the best of British and World rock. The duo, Francis MacNamara – violin/viola, whistles and vocals and Daffydd Tavinor – guitar, vocals and djembe have been on the road for four years and produced five albums. “Their technique and delivery is breath taking” –said a recent London gig review. Don’t miss them. You’ll want more." Pastiche according to Suhail Hussain at The Hamilton Arms is "a truly unique band playing Caribbean music ie Reggae, Calypso, Soul, Tamia Motown, Country, Jazz and the most beautiful songs ever" Editor's Note: we've still to receive confirmation of the group's website and gig date in January 2010 from Suhail.
