DOG WALKS IN WEST SUSSEX

Cowdray Park Estate Road, Easebourne, West Sussex

Cowdray Park: the estate road from Easebourne to Cowdray Castle and the River Rother

Dog walks in Cowdray Park, West Sussex near Midhurst have become very popular. The River Rother is an ever present attraction for most dogs who love swimming, paddling and rushing in and out of the water with sticks thrown by their owners.

Map of Dog Walks West SussexThe best place by far for dogs is the Rother Bridge beach which is sandy and has a gentle slope down to the water's edge. The water is only a few feet deep at the most, the area close to the beach only about a foot. This makes for an ideal doggy paddling area - not all dogs are bold and need persuading at first to the charms of the water by the example of other dogs.

The Rother Bridge beach is close to the Castle Causeway and is part of the circular riverine walk. It is also en route to Cowdray Castle precincts; and to Easebourne, another popular walk over a Cowdray Estate road. Easebourne is now a destination in its own right with the new Cowdray Farm Shop & Café conveniently located on the estate track just before the main Midhurst-Petworth road. Our nick name for the shop is Food Emporium or Fortnum's on Rother - a wonderful place to stop for lunch, tea or coffee, and, yes!, get severely tempted by the food treats next door.

Bullocks at Cowdray CastleYoung bullocks also share the river at the River Rother beach but are used to dogs, ignore them and carry on drinking, paddling and eating river bank grasses and tall weeds.

Some dog walkers familiar with the lesser frequented wild swimming beach - Sandy Bay - a hundred yards up stream from the Rother Bridge take their dogs for a paddle here, but in summer there is always a chance of meeting bathers. Understandably, bathers don't want lots of dogs sharing their beach. So if you walk down to the water's edge and find swimmers or picnicers please take your dog(s) elsewhere - there is room for everybody.(Dog walkers at Sand Bay below)
