COCKING: 16 miles all-weather route. Explorer Map 121 Pulborough.
The Free Public Car Park adjoining the South Downs Way on the brow of Cocking Hill which is on the A287. Alternatively, the Car Park of the Woodstock Hotel in Charlton if you're intending to have luch there.
Cycle eastwards towards Hill Barn where it is signposted English Woodland Timber. You are on the South Downs Way with panoramic views to the northeast and the southwest. When you have passed over Heyshott Down and Graffham Down you start to curve right and drop down hill to Littleton Farm which is astride the main Duncton - Hallnaker Road.
Turn right on the main road and then after a short distance turn left on the continuation of the South Downs Way towards a copse on the hill with two masts now in view further ahead and slightly to your left. Make for the masts but half a mile before reaching them - they are now half left -you come to a National Trust sign with the words Slindon Estate.
At this point dog-leg right. Do not go down hill on the metalled track - an easy mistake to make - but along the grass way to the right of this metalled track. You are now heading back towards the Duncton - Hallnaker Road to intercept it on a hill at St Mary's Farm.
Cross over into the Selhurst Park Road signposted Singleton and Goodwood but take great care as the main road is fast and busy at this point. Selhurst Park Road is generally quiet and you will enjoy a quick, easy ride along level ground for several miles with excellent views to the south and west towards the coast and Chichester. Two pillbox Victorian cottages with slate roofs and flint walls are a good waymark and are on your left and called Pilley Green Lodges. They are at the entrance to the Goodwood Estate. Shortly, after a gentle left hand bend and a bit of straight road you will spot a left hand bend sign as you approach the easterly part of Goodwood Racecourse.
At the bend go straight ahead along a flint and chalk track aptly named Chalk Road. The Racecourse now looms up on the left after a while and you start bearing right and down hill towards Charlton. Most of the track has trees on either side. At the junction of the track and the lane you will spot the Woodstock Hotel in front of you. You will receive a very warm welcome if you drop in for a bite. Many bikers make this their start point, rather than Cocking Hill Car Park.
After leaving the pub continue west for a short distance until you are on the outskirts of Charlton and then turn right up North Lane.
After about a mile, watch out for public footpath coming down the hillside to your right. This is your waymark for a dogleg to the left a few hundred yards later . Turn sharp left along this bridleway which then turns sharply north up a shallow hill past a disused quarry on the left. On the brow of this hill keep going north in an uphill direction although there is a gentle dip first. To your left in a hollow behind some trees you may spot a farm called Broadham House. You are now passing through Singleton Forest and after an uphill pedal you will rejoin the South Downs Way.
Turn left and continue back to Cocking Hill.
