BUILDING CONSERVATION
The Exsurgo Story by CAP, Conservation Architects

CAP - Conservation Architecture & Planning are Chartered Architects, Chartered Town Planners and Urban Designers providing building conservation services for historic and new buildings and historic environments in the UK and overseas. They are a Royal Institute of British Architects registered practice and are members of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

The interior design and refurbishment of Rothermere, a fine listed building in North Street, Midhurst of great local historic interest, which is now the home for Exsurgo an amazing new restaurant owned and run by Gold Medallist Chef Darren Neal, has received wide acclaim; and its our privilege to relate how Exsurgo was created by the various parties involved but most importantly by CAP the building conservation architects who undertook both the interior design - their first brilliantly executed commission - and the refurbishment.

The Story of Exsurgo and the Rothermere conservation project is told by Jack Warshaw of CAP:-

"This exciting project was completed in May 2005. It involved extensive repair and historic conservation work and complete refurbishment. The 17th century listed building, overlooking the Cowdray Park Ruins, had been altered and extended several times, including twice in the late 20th century, and was in very poor condition. From our feasibility studies, the brief that emerged was to recondition and replan the upper stories into two good quality apartments and convert the former ground floor shop to a restaurant. Chichester District Council welcomed the concept and helped refine the detailed proposals before the formal listed building and planning applications were made. Retained features such as fireplaces and oak structure were to be repaired and complemented with quality modern work, including a new rear extension to replace the 20th century work

"When it came to repairing the defective modern render on the front, we found it could be stripped away to reveal the original stone and brick facade. However, this required extensive repair, including replacing many damaged bricks with specially matched new ones. We also replaced the poor shopfront with one of more authentic period design.Technical and statutory issues also required effective yet sensitive solutions. Fire and sound separation between the restaurant and apartments had to be achieved without compromising historic features. Thermal quality of the roof was upgraded without altering its profile. Modern services, including underfloor heating, were discreetly installed. The powered kitchen extraction duct was routed through a restored stone fireplace and flue."

"The opportunity to design and fit-out the restaurant interior came with the introduction of a prize-winning Chef/proprietor, late in the construction phase. Rising to the challenge, the layout, materials, finishes, lighting, bar, and other works were all designed, specified and undertaken with the help of the excellent contractor, Charlie Neary, to suit Client's and Chef's requirements. Tables, chairs and pictures were chosen by Darren Neil and Andrew Stewart respectively."

"We are happy to undertake similar interior design commissions either in conjuction with conservation of historic buildings , work on other sensitive buildings or where we are also designing new buildings or extensions in historic settings."

The Project Architect for Rothermere was Alina Wisnicka and the Interior Designer Liz Cartell."
