Fitted Bathrooms
Bathroom Designs & Ideas for 2009

Like kitchens, bathrooms have changed in design and function in recent decades to reflect the faster pace of life. The principal change has been the rise in popularity of the shower; and of the various sytems on offer the Power Shower is the most popular.

When a whole family needs to access a bathroom to get to work or out for a leasure evening, turn-round time is important and the Power Shower is an efficient way of providing hot water. In the case of one person only using the shower it is probably the most economical way of using hot water and, of course, quicker to use than a bath which has to fill.

When we do our survey we shall need to examine your hot and cold supply, establish the run for the electric cable from the fuse box, distance from the mains inlet, and the fuse box set-up.

There are so many exciting ways of adding function to a bathroom whether old or new; and the most popular by far is an accessory.

"In this era of power-showers, the bath recalls an age when washing involved daubing oneself with perfumed unguents while having a nice little lie-down." More from Times Online Top Ten Baths.

New Bathroom Design by Daab.
"This is an indispensable reference for the design of a room unlike any other. The bathroom is no longer given over solely to personal hygiene. It has become a refuge for those seeking purification, warmth, and respite and, as such, is designed to integrate functionality with beauty and relaxation. The hundreds of colour photographs included in this practical yet visually pleasing book illustrate this truism and provide helpful decorating hints and ideas for anyone looking to re-design their bathroom ".

"Bathroom Design Goes Minimal - About Property Sept 2006
The international bathroom and kitchen specialist Ideal Standard has revealed its new collection of designer wares The new taps, mixers, sinks, basins - see picture above right - and bathroom furniture, designed by British designer Jasper Morrison, take a minimalist approach to the functional accessories of the bathroom. Commenting on the collection, Mr Morrison explained the simplicity of the design was an antidote to the over-design of many of today’s consumer products".

How to Create a Feeling of Space in a Small Bathroom

Avoid Strong Colours

Choose a white or pastel coloured bath. Use soft colours on the walls and keep stronger tones and patterns for accessories and towels. Likewise, use neutral or light colours for floor coverings or tiles. See BV24 Small Bathroom in Ash

Improve the Lighting
Use recessed lighting fixtures wherever possible and remove anything fussy or chunky which protrudes into the bathroom. Consider a larger window or a skylight if you’re up for a major redesign.

Install a Pedestal Type Wash Basin .
A lot of space may be taken by an under basin storage cabinet or vanity. Replace with a delicate pedestal wash basin and create storage space with shelving or a small, thin towel cupboard elsewhere.

Get rid of Clutter.
Go for a simple uncluttered ‘look’; avoid fixtures and adornments which protrude into the bathroom space; don’t embellish the walls with fussy framed pictures or hanging racks. Keep murals or wall art simple.

Mirrors Reflect Light & Create an Illusion of Space.
Consider a stylish flat wall radiator - Multi-column- with in-built mirror if space permits, but otherwise use one or two smaller mirrors suitably placed to reflect the space.

Keep Your Shower Curtain Pulled Back.
This allows the eye to fall on the back wall and adds the feeling of space. Of course, a through-view into the garden, if you have one, via the bathroom window, will greatly help too
.

BATHROOM LIGHTING TIPS
Reference shaving and using the basin: " Ideally, the light should be directed at the person and not reflected off the mirror. This can be achieved by positioning the two lighting fixtures in opposite directions so that light is reflected on the face from both sides. Lighting fixtures can also be placed on the wall directly over the basin, at a distance of at least 2 feet from the basin.

To avoid severe shadows it is best to steer clear of reflectors. Bathroom fixtures can also be used inside cabinets or on the ceiling over baths or bath enclosures. The right lighting fixture is essential achieving the desired light effect and avoiding a glare or shadow. There are various kinds of bathroom lighting fixtures. Bar lights house tiny trochees mounted on metal bars, of various designs and shape. These bars are fixed to the walls or counters. They provide for either up lighting (to allow light to gush down on mirror cabinets) or down lighting (to bounce light off the ceiling).

Certain bar lights with two to six shades can be used above double basins. Long bar lights eliminate the requirement for separate fixtures. Bathroom LightingThe lampshades can be of white frosted glass or glass which is translucent. The metal portion can be chrome-plated, polished brass, or some antique finish. Vanity bulbs are another type of bathroom lighting with rounded white glass enclosures for encasing light bulbs. These lights are used for providing a strong diffused lighting effect appropriate for close-up jobs. These lighting fixtures should be ideally placed over narrow basins.

Wall sconces can also be used as bathroom lighting fixture. They are generally not fixed near basins and can be put up to light cupboards. Recessed lights are most suitable as bathroom lighting fixtures. These bathroom lighting fixtures give respite from deposited moisture and soapy condensations deposited on bathroom fixtures, as the actual fixtures are recessed inside the ceiling. However, their installation and wiring is expensive."

RISE OF THE SUPER BATHROOM

by Wendy Sloane. Sunday Times February 27th 2008
"Why spend time running to a health club, or money on salon pampering, when you can relax in your own steam room and spa bath, complete with chromotherapy mood lighting — based on the theory that colour and light affect energy levels — aromatherapy water, and a designer sound system? "

"Matthew Abernethy, associate at Savills estate agency in Hampstead, north London, says potential purchasers should not be put off by the prices of such luxuries."

“Installing a super bathroom can add value to a property,” he says. “In certain levels of the market, people have come to expect them, especially recently.

“If the rest of the house is of a similar calibre, it would make sense to install a great bathroom before you sell.”

"COMBINING KEY CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS in your bathroom could make it feel even more of a haven than your living room, says Victoria O'Brien", Sunday Times, July 10th 2005

Bathroom SeatingTreat your bathroom like any other living area and provide seating, cabinets and shelves. Sitting on the edge of your bath drying your toes is uncomfortable and unecessary when free-standing seating is available. The latest designs of radiator allow for inbuilt mirrors or seating.

"Contemporary bathroom designers and manufacturers are coming up with all sorts of ideas for bathroom seating, freestanding cabinets, trollies and “bookcases”. " says Vicoria O'Brien.
